Ahmed Musa Pleads with Fans to Stop Cyberbullying Alex Iwobi After AFCON Defeat
Ahmed Musa, the captain of the Nigeria national team, has stepped forward in defence of his teammate, Alex Iwobi, urging fans to halt cyberbullying directed at the midfielder following Nigeria’s loss to Cote D’Ivoire in the final of the African Cup of Nations.
In a heartfelt plea posted on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Musa condemned cyberbullying as both a violation of decency and a serious crime. He highlighted the hypocrisy of claiming football unites while engaging in such behavior.
Musa emphasized the importance of unity in both victory and defeat, stating, “Losing a game is undoubtedly tough, but targeting a single player for the team’s shortcomings is unfair and unjust. We win as a team, and we lose as a team. Alex gave his all on the field, just like every member of our squad.”
Instead of spreading negativity, Musa called for genuine love and support to be shown towards the players, emphasizing their need for encouragement during challenging times.
The plea comes after Alex Iwobi faced intense criticism from some Nigerian fans on social media following the defeat, leading him to delete all his Instagram photos. Iwobi, who featured prominently in the match against Ivory Coast, endured cyber attacks from disappointed fans.
The Super Eagles’ dreams of securing a fourth continental crown were dashed after they were defeated 2-1 by the hosts, ending their AFCON journey.
In light of the cyberbullying incident, Musa’s appeal serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting players during both their triumphs and setbacks, fostering a culture of unity and encouragement within the football community.
